Holistic sustainability

CLIMATE PROTECTION IS OUR TOP PRIORITY

We have been practicing sustainability for more than a century. Our daily actions are characterized by consuming as few resources as possible.
We do not limit our sustainability efforts to the very important aspects of ecology and climate protection. Values for the common good such as human dignity, solidarity and justice are just as important to us as our social values.

That is why we have committed ourselves to extensive sustainability initiatives. In addition to demonstrably avoiding CO₂ in the production of closures through PVC-free technology, PANO® has been able to achieve a reduction in greenhouse gases through extensive investments across all stages of production.
Of the 31 million euros invested at the Itzehoe site over the last eleven years, 88% has gone towards direct sustainability projects.

Our sustainability compass is based on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), among others.

  • High-quality education
  • Affordable and clean energy
  • Decent work and economic growth
  • Industry, innovation and infrastructure
  • Sustainable consumption and production
  • Climate protection measures

H2 tested as a substitute for natural gas in a feasibility study2

1 Gas-powered (PVC) compound continuous drying ovens

2 Pano will be the world's first field test user to successfully test the technical feasibility of H2 as an alternative energy source in the coating oven drying process in 2023

Thanks to data-based decisions

82 % less CO₂ per cap

Thanks to consistent process optimization and the use of renewable energies, we were able to reduce CO₂ emissions in the production of our closures by 82% in 2024 compared to 2011.

In 2023, we began calculating product carbon footprints (PCFs) for our products - as an important contribution to transparency in our customers' supply chains.
The CO₂ intensities were determined as part of a mass allocation and verified by an environmental auditor. In this way, we create reliable data and make an active contribution to decarbonization.

Climate targets with substance

SBTi-validated and measurably successful

PANO® takes responsibility for the climate and the future: our climate targets are scientifically sound and validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). They are in line with the 1.5 °C target of the Paris Agreement.

We want to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions from 2,112 to 1,225 tons of CO₂ by 2030. We are already well below our target path: in 2023, we were 43% below the target value. Since the base year 2021, we have reduced our emissions by a total of 48% - primarily through the use of 100% certified green electricity (market-based).

Commitment, transparency, measurability

Strong partners

PANO® relies on strong partners for its sustainability management. PANO® is committed to climate protection and uses various partners along the way to make the initiatives a success. For example, we have our CO2-footprint (corporate carbon footprint = CCF) verified by the environmental auditor Myska.

By becoming a premium member of EcoVadis, we are constantly aware of our strengths and weaknesses and can map continuous improvement in the various dimensions such as labor/human rights, environment, ethics and sustainable procurement.

We have prepared our first sustainability report for 2024. In our sustainability reporting, we take into account various standards such as ESRS for the transparent and comprehensive communication of our achievements and future needs for action.

We have been a member of BAUM. e.V. and the SBTi since 2023. We also use the expertise of B.A.U.M. Consult GmbH for our climate accounting and for a wide range of issues relating to sustainability.

Targets with a scientific basis

Reducing emissions

One component of Pano Verschluss GmbH's active climate management is the setting of ambitious emission reduction targets in addition to recording the current climate performance based on a greenhouse gas balance sheet.
The Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) requires companies to set a reduction target that is in line with the 1.5 °C target of the Paris Climate Agreement. This target is based on the global greenhouse gas budget still available, which is calculated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Important: Offsetting services (CO2 certificates) cannot be counted as reduction services under the initiative.
Our emission reduction targets have been validated by the SBTi and include the following commitments:

Short-term target:

  • Reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% by 2030 based on 2021

Long-term target:

  • Reduction of scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by at least 90% by 2050 at the latest on a 2021 basis

Compliance with targets is monitored and checked annually by the SBTi.

OVER 100 YEARS AGO WE SET OUT ON THE PATH

Sustainable by tradition

Paul Nofer's journey began in 1920 when he came up with the idea of making closures for preserving jars from leftover sheet metal in his electrical installation business.
Typical Swabian - typical sustainability pioneer!
The inventor had to overcome many hurdles for the family business to be so successful today.

With Wulf Eberhardt, the company is now in its third generation and the tradition is being continued sustainably.
Thanks to the introduction of the innovative, PVC-free BLUESEAL® andhigh investments in increasing sustainability, PANO® is ideally equipped for the future!
